The Obituarian: How It Works
This is a professional writing service for family members, friends—and
the growing number of people who are participating in the planning
of their own memorials.
As the Obituarian* I will be responsible for interviewing,
writing, editing and even placing the obituary in newspapers of your
choice and online. The obituaries can also be used as scripts for
multimedia presentations—such as slide shows or memorial movies––that
are an increasing element of the modern memorial service.
You don’t
have to be well known to have a story worthy of telling or professionally
written. The New York Times made that point in its series (and later
book) Portraits of Grief—short, impressionistic
sketches of the nearly 3,000 people who died on September 11th. What
made the Portraits notable were the ways the writers were able to
gracefully sum up the spirit of an entire life through the telling
of short anecdotes and the use of detail and quotations. My goal
as the Obituarian is to do just that for people, like most of us,
who are notable in our own right.
*The obituarian is the writer’s pen name for this project.
